Is it ever right for a Christian to become angry?
October 9, 2009
Dear Editor:
There are some who mistakenly believe that Christians should always roll over and take whatever is dished out without responding in anger. Can this view be supported from Scripture? I do not believe so. We read in Eph. 4:26-27 “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.” The Apostle Paul was writing to Christians in the city of Ephesus and he tells them that it is possible to be angry and not to sin. They are told to not hold on to anger.
Anger is to be expressed and not repressed. It is to be directed to issues and not used to attack people. It seems that most of the anger that is expressed today is directed toward people rather than issues. Only God has the right to get angry with people because we read in Psalm 7:11 “ God is angry with the wicked every day.” Even though God becomes angry with those who behave wickedly He has provided for deliverance from His wrath by sending His Son, Jesus to be our substitute and die in our place on the cross.
God’s wrath was poured out on His Son so that you and I might be delivered from it to live holy lives. I Thessalonians 5:9 says “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.” Jesus took our punishment so that we need not face the wrath of God that is to come.upon the wicked. We must trust in what Jesus has done for us and not try to earn God’s acceptance. I hope that not one of us will miss this opportunity by failing trust in Jesus.
Sincerely,
