What has Happened to Tolerance?
January 6, 2009

Dear Editor:

What has happened to tolerance? The leaders of the homosexual community are upset with President-elect Obama because he has invited Pastor Rick Warren to pray at the Inauguration Ceremony on January 20th. It seems to me that the leaders of the homosexual community require tolerance of others but refuse to demonstrate it themselves. They want us to accept their efforts to change the definition of marriage around the country and yet they have difficulty bearing with a pastor who does not approve of same-sex marriage.

I believe that Mr. Obama made a wise choice in inviting Pastor Rick Warren to pray if he indeed desires to draw the different factions of this country together. Pastor Warren and his congregation at Saddleback Community Church have done more to address the problem of AIDS around the world than many in the homosexual community. He doesn’t promote homosexuality but neither does he refuse to dialogue with homosexuals. He maintains his integrity and is willing to communicate with those with whom he differs. I believe that this is tolerance.

It seems that the atheists are concerned that Pastor Warren will invoke the name of Jesus in his prayer. This is the way that Christians pray. Should Pastor Warren be forced to change the way that he prays in order to accommodate a significant minority. Most people in this country believe in God and a large majority of them invoke the name of Jesus in their prayers. Where is the tolerance of the atheists?

I believe that it is time for the silent majority to speak up before we lose all of our rights.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tony Gibson, Pastor
