"Act now, before it is too late!"

September 30, 2004

Dear Editor:

I believe that the readers of your newspaper should be made aware of the fact that our United States Constitution is being amended. It will either continue to be amended by the Supreme Court – which is not elected by the citizens of this country – or by a vote of the elected officials and the people of 2/3 of the states.

The sanctity of marriage as the union of one man with one woman is in jeopardy, and if we fail to speak out now we will see changes in health care, school curriculum and free speech.

I agree with a statement that was made by Sen. Christopher Dodd in a letter sent to me recently that stated: “Amending the constitution should be confined to those rare occasions where there is a great policy need.” He believes that the matter of marriage should be left to the states and I agree, but the Supreme Court has been known to reverse the decision of the states and to declare laws that were passed by the people unconstitutional.

I believe that the matter of marriage is a great policy need and should be put to a vote of the elected officials and the people of each state. This will give the states an opportunity to express themselves in a way that will prevent the Supreme Court from imposing its will upon us.

I hope that those who agree with me will join with me and others on Oct. 15 on the Mall in Washington, D.C. from 12 noon to 3pm to hear Allan Keyes, Chuck Colson, Anne Graham Lotz, and Rabbi Daniel Lapin and others speak on this issue and take a stand for traditional marriage.

Now is the time to act before it is too late.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Dr. Anthony L. Gibson,
